Early Life and Military Service

Nguyen Tan Dung was born on November 17, in Ca Mau province, South Vietnam.

At the age of 12, he joined the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, which later became part of the People's Army of Vietnam. Dung provided first aid, assisted in communications, cared for the sick, and served as a medic during the Vietnam War. He suffered four injuries and received a 2/4 disability rating.

Medical Training and Rise in Politics

After the war, Dung studied medicine and earned a bachelor's degree.

He entered the Communist Party of Vietnam in and continued his military career. He was elected to the Politburo at the eighth, ninth, and tenth party congresses.

Prime Ministerial Tenure

Dung became Vietnam's Prime Minister in , succeeding Phan Van Khai.

He was the first post August Revolution communist leader and the youngest person to hold the position (age 57). Having spent his life in South Vietnam during the war, Dung was unique for a high-ranking communist leader.
