Coppafeel currently does double duty intwo of Milwaukeeâs more visible rap groups, KingHellBastard and the House of M,but his roots in the cityâs rap scene go way back to the mid-â90s, when heco-founded the cityâs flagship hip-hop group The Rusty Ps, then called TheRusty Pelicans.
When Coppafeel briefly lived in Madison, he started a group there, too, TheIntel Agents. Even his new solo debut, CoppaâsWelfare Foods, he views as something of a group effort. Itâs loaded withguest spots from Coppafeelâs band mates past and present, and was compiled withextensive input from his peers.
âThe whole process of making the albumwas collaborative,â Coppafeel says.
Dana coppafeel biography death I don't like it to sound muddy. You're not going to buy my hook when I spend just as much time writing that as you did creating that beat. The reason itself could be Reason, and a hunger that Coppa hasn't had in a while. A lot of it is all local.âI think thatâs why the title Welfare Foods was fitting, because allthese other people chipped in.â
WelfareFoods leans heavily on the sounds of golden-era hip-hop,particularly the smooth, easy loops that preponderated around â94 and â95,around the time Coppafeel was in high school and beginning to take rappingseriously.
âA lot of what draws me to that time isit was when you would really anticipate new music,â Coppafeel says.
âYouâd readarticles and interviews about this new music, then have to wait to hear the newNas album. Nowadays, though, you donât have to wait to hear anything; you justlog in and itâs there. That anticipation is gone.â
That isnât to say that things werebetter back then.
Dana coppafeel biography wikipedia Are you? Anyhow, I was really drunk, and it just kind of happened where, I palmed this girl's ass while she was rapping. There is something for everybody on this EP and it is the second most balanced project Coppa has done or been a part of, with "Remember The Name" taking the cake. The year saw Dana release his first solo album, "Coppa's Welfare Foods," that was mostly embraced by those who heard it, which led to him clustering together songs that he had been featured on previously for "The Feature," a mixtape that was meant to highlight some of his best guest spots. In the early days of The Rusty Pelicans, Coppafeel recalls, there wasnât much of a support system for rap music.
âThere were only one or two venuesbooking hip-hop, so if you wanted to perform you had to pay to play,â he says.âThere werenât any producers making beats either, so thatâs why we were makingout our beats. Recording was hard, too.
It wasnât like now, where all you needis a computer and a mic, and you can record at your homieâs house and hang had to pay to be in the studio, so you were always watching the clock.â
Though Coppafeel sometimes describeshimself like an old veteran, WelfareFoods is decidedly youthful. On record Coppafeel is a permanent adolescent, rapping in his daffy, boyish voice about matters of girls and partying.

Mike Virus just went by Mike.He fitsright in with the somethings that now dominate Milwaukeeâs hip-hop scene, and heâs enjoyingthe sceneâs recent renaissance with them, even if he doesnât always share theirconquer-the-world optimism.
âThis is the first time in Milwaukee thereâs been ahuge uproar around hip-hop, with so many rappers really taking it seriously anda lot of hungry talent,â he says.
âA lot of them talk big about puttingMilwaukee on the map and how theyâre going to blow and they want to seize theiropportunity, but at the end of the day, I think youâre still in Milwaukee andthereâs no industry here.
âIf youâre making music just with hopesof making it big, then your music is going to miss the mark,â he continues.âThatâs why I treat making music like playing a video gameit ainât going to doanything for anybody except me.
If you donât have that type of mind frame, youâre setting yourself up for disappointment.â
